Why do we say no to treating you?
At our Harborne, Birmingham cosmetic clinic, we understand that seeking aesthetic treatments like dermal fillers or anti-wrinkle treatments can be a personal decision. However, maintaining a professional and ethical approach is paramount to us. Sometimes, we find ourselves in the position of declining treatment requests, and it's crucial to understand why.
1. You don't need it:
It's not uncommon for individuals to approach us with requests for treatments they may not necessarily require or treatments which may negatively impact their overall facial aesthetic or even their mental health in our opinion. In such cases, our responsibility as aesthetic doctors is to provide honest assessments. For instance, if you're considering anti-wrinkle treatment for forehead lines, but we believe that paralysing your strong frontalis muscle could lead to eyebrow drooping, we'll advise against it. Our goal is to enhance your natural beauty, not alter it unnecessarily. If we are concerned about possible Body dysmorphic disorder (BDD), or body dysmorphia then we are likely to advice you to seek help and support for your mental health before seeking any aesthetic treatments as cosmetic procedures can sometimes worsen an individual's mental health if they are suffering with BDD. Find out more about BDD on https://www.nhs.uk/mental-health/conditions/body-dysmorphia/
2. The timing is wrong
For certain treatments like fillers or anti-wrinkle injections, it might be too soon for you to undergo the procedure safely. We typically recommend against anti-wrinkle treatments at intervals shorter than three months to ensure your safety and optimal results.
Other reason we delay treatments are if you have upcoming travel plans too soon post treatment (see our blog on travelling post injectable treatments for guidance on how much time to leave between having a treatment and planning a flight) or you have a major social event coming up (particularly true for dermal filler treatment where bruising and swelling is more common especially with lip filler treatment). We normally advice 2 weeks to allow the filler to integrate and any bruising/ swelling to settle.
3. Your expectations are unrealistic
Every cosmetic procedure, whether surgical or non-surgical, has its limitations. If we believe that your desired outcome is unrealistic or unattainable with our treatments, we will honestly communicate this to you. Our aim is to manage your expectations and provide guidance on more suitable options. For instance, if we feel that a surgical approach might better achieve your goals, we'll guide you in that direction.
4. Your previous treatments need correction or adjustment
We believe in delivering aesthetic treatments that not only enhance your natural beauty but also prioritise your safety and well-being. If you've had treatments elsewhere and are unsatisfied with the results, it's essential to assess the situation carefully. Sometimes, it's necessary to allow filler to dissolve naturally or even to dissolve it intentionally before starting anew.
Adding more filler to an already overfilled face is not the solution. This approach can lead to undesirable outcomes and may compromise the harmony of your facial features. For instance, lip filler treatments are a common area where migration can occur, especially after repeat dermal filler treatments, especially if done too frequently or with large volumes.
5. Your medical history raises concerns
Another reason we may decline treatment is if your medical history raises concerns about the safety and efficacy of the procedure. For example, if you're currently taking medications or have a medical condition that increases the risk of complications or adverse reactions, we may advise against specific treatments until your condition is better managed or until it's safe to proceed.
There are also absolute contraindications. If you have certain allergies like egg allergy or suffer with neuromuscular disorders such as myasthenia gravis then anti wrinkle treatment (botox) is contraindicated.
If you are pregnant or breast feeding then we would advice against injectable cosmetic treatments.
In other cases, it may be practitioner-dependent. For example, we have previously refused lip filler treatment for someone with uncontrolled diabetes with a high “Hba1c”, as the risk of infection from cosmetic procedures outweighed any proposed benefit. In such instances, we may advise you to improve your diabetic control before considering injectable treatments.
